From the Brexit referendum in the UK, the election of Donald Trump in the US, and the most recent tragedy at a mosque in Quebec City, it is hard not to notice that politicians of various stripes have “Islam” and “Muslims” on the brain. So many want to talk about what “Islam” is or who “Muslims” really are. In this talk, we will explore the political work done when “Islam” and “Muslim” are invoked. Whether as social constructions or literary tropes, “Islam” and “Muslim” become proxies for something that all of us have a stake in defining, but must now reclaim as our own. Professor Emon will offer a framework for filtering the random bits of information that fall from the Twitter-sphere. Also, participants are invited to submit in advance a media headline and story that they want to discuss and problematize.
